A variety of tax credits are available for a limited time for homeowners who make the switch to clean energy. These tax credits took effect in January 1, 2023 and many are expiring between now and the end of 2025. Expiration dates for each tax credit are provided below.
Energy efficient home improvements placed in service by 12/31/25 - Up to $3,200
Section 25C credit for residents who purchase qualifying upgrades on their home can receive up to $2,000 for heat pumps (HVAC + water heater).
Up to $1,200 for weatherization, including doors, windows, insulation, and for energy audits and electrical panels.
To Claim: File Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits Part II with your tax return.

Residential Clean Energy Tax Credit - Up to 30% for expenditures made by 12/31/25
Section 25D tax credit for homeowners can receive a credit equal to 30% of the purchase and installation costs for:
- Solar panels
- Solar water heaters
- Fuel cell property expenditures
- Small wind turbines
- Geothermal heat pumps
- Battery storage systems

Electric Vehicle Charger placed in service by 6/30/26 - Up to $1,000
Section 30C tax credit for homeowners residing in census tracts that:
- Are not in an urban area,
- Poverty rate of the population is 20% or higher; OR;
- Metropolitan or nonmetropolitan area where median family income is <80% of state median family income

To Claim: File Form 8911, Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit with your tax return.
9/30/25 - New Electric Vehicle Tax Credit up to $7500
Section 30D tax credit. Your modified adjusted gross income is <$150k individual / <$225k HoH / <$300k joint.
Qualifying vehicles must meet domestic content requirements and have MSRP of less than $55k, or $80k for vans, trucks, SUV’s.
To Claim: File Form 8936, Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit with your tax return.

Used Electric Vehicle acquired before 9/30/25 - Up to $4,000
Your modified adjusted gross income is <$75k individual / <$112.5K HoH / <$150k joint.
Qualifying electric or fuel cell vehicle purchased through licensed dealer with MSRP of <$25k, weight rating of <14,000 lbs., & at least 2-year old model.
To Claim: File Form 8936, Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit with your tax return.

All IRA tax credits are nonrefundable. In other words, you can’t receive more back than what you owe in taxes. In other words, you must have sufficient taxable Income to access these tax credits.

LAUNCH DATE TO BE DETERMINED - Federal Home Energy Rebates
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), passed by Congress in 2022, contained billions of dollars in rebates for homeowners and multifamily buildings for energy efficiency and electrification projects.
